ORP State Central Committee Report 1-23-23

January 23, 2023

The Ohio Republican Party State Central Committee had its reorganizational meeting in Columbus, Ohio Friday January 6, 2023

After beginning with prayer and the pledge, a motion was made to suspend the rules in order to allow the phone participants to vote which passed easily. 3 members were on the phone: 2 were traveling and one was ill.

New Business included filling vacant seats In Districts 9, 17, and 33. District 9 is located in central Hamilton County, including the majority of the City of Cincinnati. Recent Ohio Senate Candidate, Orlando Sonza, and recent NRW guest speaker, Lauren Bowen, were both unopposed and were thus installed to fill those two vacant positions.

Next on the agenda was passage of “Resolution to Support Parents and School Districts in Rejecting Harmful, Coercive and Burdensome Gender Identity Policies and Protect School Lunch Programs and Other Federal Funding Subject to Title IX”, copy attached. We then quickly ran through the Treasurer’s Report and the Chairman’s Report anxious to get to the election of a New Chairman and Officers.

Originally there were 5 candidates in the race although the day before the meeting, candidate Jimmie Stewart, dropped out. Remaining candidates included:

    • Jean Anderson – Past Mayor of Vermillion
    • Dale Fellows -The Lake County Chairman and former SCC member.
    • Alex Triantafillou – Hamilton County Chairman and SCC member
    • Bryan Williams – Summit County Chairman, SCC member and Vice Chair of the State Central Committee

After each candidate gave a five-minute speech and quite a bit of discussion, paper ballots were collected and tallied. Hometown Favorite, Alex Triantafilou ran away with it in a landslide. After the votes were tallied, Bryan Williams made a motion to elect our new chair in a unanimous decision. That motion carried.

We then elected new officers as follows: Curt Braden for Vice Chair, Ron Maag for Treasurer, Gary James for Assistant Treasurer, and Tony Schroeder as Secretary. All the new officers were then sworn in as well.

Alex gave a short speech on the need to amend the by-laws; specifically, on the issue of passage of Resolutions and recognized Josh Brown from Hilliard, Ohio, who then made a Motion to Censure the 22 Republicans that recently sided with democrats to elect a more centrist speaker of the Ohio House, Jason Stephens. There were multiple seconds and discussion ensued. Linked below is an article written by the Cleveland Plain Dealer that does a much better job explaining this issue than I can do here.

In other news, I wanted to be sure you know that photo id requirement has been signed into law.  Numerous parties are already challenging this in court.

Ohio voters will need photo ID for in-person voting, under bill signed by Gov. Mike DeWine – Cleveland.com 1/6/23

The fact that abortion is being returned to the states will be before this assembly. So, it is critical that we stay informed and involved with what is happening in Columbus. Thank you for any attention you are able to give to the many efforts that come before us in these tumultuous times.

Respectfully submitted,
